CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Ever had a business or product idea but didn’t know where to start? Or wondered what it would take to reach your entrepreneurial goals? Come get inspired by a lecture by Islander alumna Liza Wisner, an award-winning television personality.

Wisner’s lecture “The Power of People” focuses on personal anecdotes about finding her unique voice, cultivating confidence, and building her incredible future as a Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi alumna.  

“One of the things I had decided was to tell people about my story and my story began at A&M-CC,” Wisner shared. “And every time I [visit], there is a rush because I feel at home. This is the place where I became who I am. Coming back on campus is such a rejuvenation of the excitement I had when I went to school there.”

The lecture will take place on Thursday, Feb. 7, from 1-3 p.m. in the University Center, Anchor Ballroom C. This event is part of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Black History Month celebrations and is free and open to the public.

“What I hope people take away from this lecture is that you can’t do things alone,”
Wisner said. “You need to meet people and make connections, people who challenge you and check your character because it shapes you. That’s the beauty of being in such a diverse place. Not everyone will like you and agree with you, but you can survive it and it will make you stronger.”  

Wisner earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a minor in Management of Information Systems and Master of Science in Educational Technology from A&M-Corpus Christi. She is the founder of Texas Techies and PowerUp, and has been featured numerous times in local news but also received national attention with her time on “The Apprentice” and appeared in Texas Business Women, People, and many others. On top of being named “Corpus Christi Under 40, Person of the Year,” Wisner was recently recognized as a recipient of this year’s “Y Women in Careers Awards.” She is also a wife and mother to three sons.

The Island University continues to celebrate BHM throughout February, with events that include:

• Black History Month Display – The Mary and Jeff Bell Library will feature interactive exhibits, displays with local black history, and collection highlights throughout the library from Friday, Feb. 1, through Thursday, Feb. 28. The displays are free and open to the public.

• Step Afrika! – Step Afrika! will perform on Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 7-9 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The dance company blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, African traditional dance and influences from a variety of other dance and art forms. • MLK Awards Luncheon – The Islander Cultural Alliance (ICA) will celebrate the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the MLK Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Join them in recognizing students, faculty, and staff who exemplify the ideals of MLK.
