Anti-Epileptic Effect of Ganoderma Lucidum

There are around 60 million epileptic patients worldwide [1], and nearly 80% of them are in developing regions [2], [3]. It is a condition that can seriously affect quality of life and a global campaign against epilepsy is required [4]. Epilepsy can be managed by drugs, for example, 75% of patients respond well to phenobarbital treatment [5]. After one year of treatment with sodium valproate, 42% patients were seizure free and 84% patients had a decrease in seizure frequency of, at least, 50% [6]. However, most of drugs have side-effects on brain function, e.g. mood alteration or neurocognitive function [2], [5], reduction in neuron excitation and inhibition of normal activity. Thus, finding a more effective drug with fewer side effects is of continuing importance [7].
